Robert Kohnen was a renowned Belgian harpsichordist, born on June 2, 1932, in St.-Vith, Belgium. He studied organ at the Lemmens Institute and the Brussels Conservatory but was self-taught as a harpsichordist. Kohnen co-founded the Alarius Ensemble in 1954, contributing significantly to its unique approach to Baroque music. He also played a key role in the Kuijken Quartet's distinctive style, which earned them international recognition. Kohnen performed extensively as a soloist and continuo player, collaborating with notable musicians like the Kuijken brothers and René Jacobs. His solo recordings include works by J.S. Bach, François Couperin, and Jean-Philippe Rameau. Kohnen retired as a harpsichord professor at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels in 1997 but continued teaching at international masterclasses until his passing on December 26, 2019.
