Frank Stokes

Frank Stokes was a fundamental figure in the development of Memphis blues, with a musical career that influenced a generation of blues musicians. Born in Shelby County, Tennessee, in 1888, Stokes grew up orphaned and made a living as a blacksmith, but it was his music that made his name. Often considered one of the "Father of Memphis Blues," his style blended blues, country, and folk, reflecting the melting pot of influences in the Mississippi Delta region.

Stokes formed a partnership with guitarist Dan Sane, and together they became known as the Beale Street Sheiks, performing on the vibrant Memphis music scene of Beale Street. Although not as widely known today as some of his contemporaries, Stokes' guitar skills and songwriting have garnered critical acclaim. His recordings from 1928 to 1929 for the Victor label, such as "The Victor Recordings (1928 - 1929)," feature both solo performances and duets with Sane, showcasing his dynamic fingerpicking style and powerful vocals. These sessions left a lasting legacy, and even decades after his death in 1955, compilations such as "Creator Of The Memphis Blues" and "Presenting Frank Stokes" continue to bring the work of one of the original bluesmen to new audiences.
