Fermin Muguruza is a prominent Basque musician, producer, and filmmaker known for his influential work in the genres of punk rock, ska, and reggae. Born in the town of Irun in the Basque Country, Muguruza’s career skyrocketed in the 1980s as the frontman of the seminal ska-punk band Kortatu. Following their split in 1988, he continued to diversify his musical direction by forming the group Negu Gorriak, which combined hardcore punk with hip-hop, reggae, and various other musical styles, often sung in the Basque language, Euskara.
After Negu Gorriak disbanded in 1996, Muguruza embarked on a successful solo career, consistently pushing the envelope with his politically charged lyrics and eclectic soundscapes. His works often reflect his passionate advocacy for Basque nationalism and social justice. In recent years, his creativity has transcended music into the realm of cinema as well. Albums like "Lurralde Komantxe" and "Artea fronteko lehen lerroan" demonstrate his enduring commitment to cultural exploration and critique. Moreover, his projects "Black is Beltza II: Ainhoa (Soinu-Banda)" and "Berlin-Ulrike Meinhof/Black is Beltza" showcase his crossover into narrative storytelling through animated film soundtracks, affirming Muguruza's multifaceted talent and his position as a thought-provoking figure in the global music and arts scene.
