Jordi Savall

Jordi Savall is a preeminent figure in the world of early music, esteemed for his virtuosity on the viola da gamba and his dedication to historical performance. Born in Igualada, Catalonia, Spain, in 1941, Savall's professional career launched in earnest after his studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland, where he specialized in early music performance. Founding the ensembles Hespèrion XX (later Hespèrion XXI), La Capella Reial de Catalunya, and Le Concert des Nations, Savall has been instrumental in bringing pre-18th century music to modern audiences, often focusing on forgotten and neglected works and composers.

A prolific recording artist, Savall has released over 230 albums, often exploring historical themes and intercultural dialogues through music. His extensive discography showcases a remarkable range, including medieval, renaissance, baroque, and classical repertoires. Recent releases, such as "Beethoven: Missa Solemnis, Op. 123" and "W. A. Mozart: Requiem in D Minor, K. 626," underscore his versatility in transcending the boundaries of early music to embrace later classical works. Savall is not only celebrated for his musicianship but also for his scholarly approach, as evidenced in thematic and musicologically-informed projects like "Cancioneros del Siglo de Oro" and "Codex Las Huelgas." His contributions to music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors, positioning him as a pivotal and enduring figure in the revival and interpretation of early music.
