Sinfonye

Sinfonye is an English musical ensemble specializing in medieval music, founded in 1987 by the versatile Australian musician Stevie Wishart. The group combines historical research with improvisational skills to bring the music of the medieval period (circa 1000 to 1400) to life in a fresh and engaging way. Known for their delicate, refined touch, Sinfonye's performances often incorporate traditional instruments such as the medieval fiddle and hurdy-gurdy, along with various percussion instruments, creating a sound that honors medieval traditions while avoiding any stuffiness. The ensemble has performed extensively across Europe and North America, including appearances at major festivals and in multimedia projects, and has released several albums focusing on medieval repertoires, especially works related to female composers and poets of the era.

Stevie Wishart, the founding director, is a composer, performer, and researcher with deep expertise in medieval music, composition, and electronic music. Under her direction, Sinfonye has undertaken notable projects such as performing the Cantigas de Santa Maria and presenting multimedia performances of Hildegard of Bingen’s works. The group’s music is often based on careful transcription and arrangement of traditional medieval compositions, and their artistry highlights the historical context of the music while making it accessible and vibrant for contemporary audiences.
