Saban Bajramovic

Šaban Bajramović was a Serbian Romani musician, often hailed as the "King of Romani music." Born on April 16, 1936, in Niš, Serbia, Bajramović grew up in a musical Romani community that would heavily influence his future career. Despite never having formal education in music, the self-taught Bajramović honed his remarkable singing and songwriting talents through years of practice and performance.

He began his career in the 1950s, with a distinct style blending Roma music with jazz, Balkan and pop influences, which led to a soundscape rich in emotion and vigor. Over the years, he earned critical acclaim and a dedicated following with his gravelly voice and heartfelt performances. His vast repertoire included songs like "Đelem, Đelem," which eventually became an anthem for the Romani people globally. His work was not limited to music; Šaban also appeared in a number of Serbian films, contributing to his status as a cultural icon.

Throughout his career, he recorded over 50 albums and composed around 650 songs, forever changing the landscape of Roma music. Despite the barriers he faced, including a difficult life marked by periods of poverty and hardship, Bajramović's talent and passion for music left an indelible impact on the world of music. He passed away on June 8, 2008, but his legacy endures through his passionate recordings and contributions to Romani culture. The albums "Povratak kralja," "Romske pesme," and "Gypsy Legend," among others, continue to bring the vibrant spirit of Romani music to new generations of listeners.
