Poor Creature is an Irish folk trio made up of Ruth Clinton, Cormac MacDiarmada, and John Dermody, each bringing their unique backgrounds from bands like Landless and Lankum to this project. They formed during the COVID-19 lockdown, beginning as a duo with Clinton and MacDiarmada arranging songs from traditional Irish and American folk traditions before Dermody joined to add a new dimension with drums. The group reimagines songs of love, loss, and the supernatural through sparse, dreamy, and sometimes psychedelic arrangements, blending vintage instruments with modern production techniques. Their music carries an experimental edge while still honoring the deep roots of folk music, resulting in a sound that feels both timeless and fresh.
In July 2025, Poor Creature released their debut album, *All Smiles Tonight*, which includes songs like "Bury Me Not," "Adieu Lovely Erin," and "The Whole Town Knows." The album explores themes of parting and loss with haunting vocals and inventive arrangements, using instruments like the Hohner Organetta to give a vintage yet fresh feel. Critics note their ability to turn traditional songs into contemporary reflections on emotional and even environmental concerns, creating a rich, immersive listening experience. Their early performances began online during lockdown, and they have since gained attention for their captivating live shows and thoughtful reinterpretations of folk classics.
