La Cherga is a collective of cross-border musicians united by frontman Nevenko Bucan, an ex-Yugoslavian who later settled in Austria. The band's name, inspired by a type of Balkan rug that represents a mélange of colors and patterns, reflects the diverse influences and backgrounds of its members. The group’s members hailing from various parts of the Balkans, including Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Bosnia, bring together a rich tapestry of cultural and musical heritages. La Cherga blends several genres ranging from Balkan brass sounds, reggae, dub, and electronica to create a pulsating and socially-aware brand of music — a characteristic that has been central to their work since forming in the early 2000s.
Their album "Revolve," which further extended their musical exploration, established the band as a pioneer in fusing traditional Eastern European music with modern genres. Following up, "Melaha" continued to push musical boundaries, with lyrics often tackling contemporary socio-political issues, harnessing the power of music as a tool for commentary. Their commitment to authenticity and transforming the myriad strands of their cultural roots into compelling modern narratives was again evident in "Fake No More." La Cherga stands out for their vibrant live performances, where the energy of brass, electronic beats, and poignant lyrics come together to captivate audiences, earning them a loyal following in the world music scene.
