Peter Kowald (1944–2002) was a German double bassist and a major figure in European free jazz and improvised music. Based in Wuppertal, he became closely associated with the city’s influential FMP scene and was a key member of Peter Brötzmann’s legendary octet on **Machine Gun** (1968), one of the most famous recordings in the genre. Known for a huge, physical sound and a willingness to push the bass beyond its traditional role, Kowald was as comfortable driving intense group blowouts as he was exploring texture, space, and extended techniques.
Across his career he collaborated widely with improvisers from Europe, the U.S., and beyond, and he was deeply involved in globe-spanning, community-minded projects—most notably the **Global Village**/“Improvisers’ Orchestra” concept that brought together musicians from different scenes and cultures. Whether in small, highly interactive ensembles or large, unruly collectives, Kowald’s playing and organizing helped define the spirit of modern free improvisation: adventurous, collaborative, and open-ended.
