Jaap Schröder was a renowned Dutch violinist, conductor, and musicologist best known for his pioneering work in the field of historically informed performance. Born in 1925, he played a significant role in reviving interest in Baroque and Classical repertoire performed on period instruments. As a violinist, he collaborated with leading early music ensembles like the Academy of Ancient Music and the English Concert, and he was a longtime member of the Dutch group Concerto Amsterdam.
Schröder also had a distinguished academic career, teaching at Yale University and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland, where he shared his deep knowledge of performance practice with generations of aspiring musicians.
