Partho Sarothy is a renowned Indian musician known for his mastery of the sarod, a stringed instrument central to Hindustani classical music. Born in 1960 in Calcutta (Bengal), he comes from a family rooted in khyal music, a prominent tradition in Indian classical music. His musical journey began under his father, who was a disciple of Pandit Radhika Mohan Moitra. Sarothy later studied under Ustad Dhyanesh Khan, a son and disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, and since 1980, he has been a student of the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar. This tutelage has significantly shaped his musical style, which is characterized by harmony, tranquility, and a meditative approach.
Sarothy has performed extensively worldwide, both as a soloist and as an accompanist to Pandit Ravi Shankar.
