Christian Sinding

Christian Sinding (1856–1941) was a Norwegian composer, often considered one of the leading figures in the late Romantic era of music, particularly within his native country. Born in Kongsberg, Norway, Sinding studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, immersing himself in the rich musical culture of Germany which greatly influenced his mostly Romantic style. Over his lifetime, he composed an extensive body of work that included symphonies, chamber music, piano works, and songs.

Although Sinding's musical catalog is both varied and extensive, he is most famously known for his piano piece "Frühlingsrauschen" (Rustle of Spring), Op. 32, No. 3. This piece has captivated audiences since its publication in 1896 and remains a popular and enduring favorite for its lyrical melody and vibrant expressiveness. Sinding's oeuvre showcases a strong melodic sense with a dramatic use of harmony, reflecting his deep-rooted Nordic sensibilities combined with a broad pan-European Romantic influence. Despite his prolific output, which includes over 120 opus numbers ranging from solo piano pieces to violin works, much of Sinding's music has fallen into relative obscurity, with only "Rustle of Spring" continuing to regularly grace concert halls and recordings. Nonetheless, recent releases and reissues of his work demonstrate a renewed interest in revisiting and rediscovering Sinding's contributions to the classical music repertoire.
