The Nightingales are a British post-punk band formed in 1979 in Birmingham by former members of The Prefects, including frontman Robert Lloyd. Known for their sharp wit, angular guitar work, and genre-defying approach, The Nightingales emerged during the heyday of UK post-punk and quickly gained a reputation for their intense live performances and acerbic, literate lyrics. Though never chart-toppers, they cultivated a cult following and remained relentlessly creative.
The band has gone through numerous line-up changes over the years, with Robert Lloyd remaining the constant driving force. Despite a hiatus in the late '80s, The Nightingales reformed in the early 2000s and have been impressively prolific ever since, releasing a string of acclaimed albums including Four Against Fate, The New Emperor’s New Clothes, and The Awful Truth. Their enduring legacy and influence were recognized in the 2021 documentary “King Rocker,” directed by Michael Cumming and written by comedian Stewart Lee, which celebrated Lloyd’s unique place in British alternative music.
