DIIV is an American indie rock band formed in 2011 by vocalist, guitarist, and frontman Zachary Cole Smith. Initially conceived as a solo project, it quickly blossomed into a full-fledged band with the addition of members Andrew Bailey (guitar), Colin Caulfield (bass), and Ben Newman (drums). DIIV's sound is characterized by a hazy, dreamlike quality that melds elements of shoegaze, dream pop, and post-punk, with introspective lyrics and lush, melodic instrumental arrangements.
The band first garnered critical acclaim with their 2012 debut album "Oshin," which showcased their distinct blend of ethereal textures and propulsive rhythms. Their follow-up, 2016's "Is the Is Are," delved deeper into the trials and tribulations of Smith's personal life while cementing the band's standing in the indie music scene. The evolution continued with their third album, "Deceiver," released in 2019, where DIIV explored a heavier, grunge-infused direction. Their live energy and ability to connect with fans have been captured on releases such as "Live at The Murmrr Theatre." Over the course of their discography, with singles like "Dopamine," "Under the Sun," and "Blankenship," DIIV has maintained a commitment to emotive storytelling through their enveloping sonic landscapes.
