Steeleye Span

Steeleye Span is a British folk rock band that formed in 1969, known for their distinctive blend of traditional British folk music with electric rock elements. Originally part of the late 1960s folk revival, the group was co-founded by Ashley Hutchings (formerly of Fairport Convention), and quickly developed a unique sound marked by tight harmonies, electric instrumentation, and a strong focus on traditional ballads, myths, and folk tales. Over the decades, the band has seen numerous lineup changes, with vocalist Maddy Prior being one of the most enduring and iconic members.

Steeleye Span gained significant attention in the 1970s with albums like Below the Salt and Now We Are Six, and they’re perhaps best known for their hit “All Around My Hat,” which reached the UK top 10 in 1975. Their music often features centuries-old songs given a modern twist, and their dedication to preserving Britain's folk heritage while keeping it fresh and accessible has earned them a loyal following. Even after more than 50 years and numerous albums, Steeleye Span continues to tour and record, maintaining their place as one of the defining acts in British folk rock history.
