Louis Couperin

Louis Couperin (c. 1626 – 1661) was a prominent French Baroque composer, virtuoso harpsichordist and organist, esteemed during and beyond his brief lifetime. Born into a musical family that would later include the famous François Couperin "le Grand," Louis served as a linchpin in the development of French keyboard music. He was neither prolific nor influential merely within his own era; his work presaged the French clavecin school, influencing the generations that followed.

Couperin's music was revered for its rich harmonies, complex counterpoint, and the elegant, dance-like character of his many keyboard suites. Despite the fact that much of his work was published posthumously and attributed to him only through scholarly research, Couperin's compositions continue to captivate performers and audiences alike. His oeuvre, encompassing a variety of suites, dances, and the unforgettably mournful "Tombeau de Mr. de Blancrocher," reflects the sensibilities of the 17th-century French nobility for whom such music was both entertainment and a symbol of sophistication. His most recent releases, including the "Complete Harpsichord Music" and "Nouvelles Suites de clavecin," stand as a testament to his enduring legacy in the Baroque repertoire.
