The Books

The Books were an avant-garde duo whose innovative approach to music carved out a distinct niche in the early 2000s. Comprising Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong, the group formed in New York in 1999, with Zammuto contributing guitar and vocals, and de Jong, a cellist, handling the bulk of the sampling duties. Their music was an eclectic tapestry woven from acoustic melodies, spoken word samples plundered from obscure sources, and a collage of sonic textures that defied conventional genre classifications. Through meticulous crafting and editing, The Books became known for creating poignant, almost indescribable soundscapes that resonated with both accessibility and complexity.

During their active years, The Books released a series of albums that pushed the boundaries of how music could be made and experienced. Each of their notable works—including "Thought For Food" (2002), "The Lemon of Pink" (2003), and "Lost and Safe" (2005)—featured a rich exploration of organic and electronic sounds, underlined by an intellectual playfulness. The duo's final studio album, "The Way Out," arrived in 2010 and continued to redefine their musical language with even bolder experimentation. Post their disbanding in 2012, a sense of their pioneering spirit was kept alive through remastered versions of their classic records, ensuring that their legacy would continue to inspire and intrigue new generations of listeners. The release of "Music For A French Elevator And Other Oddities" offered fans a compilation of B-sides and rarities, serving as a final, fittingly unconventional farewell to a band whose work remains unparalleled in its originality.
