Manik Varma

Manik Varma (not to be confused with the emerging artist who has songs like "Innocent Eyes" and "Akhiyan"), was an acclaimed Indian classical vocalist admired for her deep and soul-stirring performances in the Kirana Gharana style. Born on April 13, 1929, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, she grew up in an environment imbued with musical appreciation, which shaped her future as a distinguished singer. She was a disciple of Sureshbabu Mane and later, his sister Hirabai Badodekar, who were both stalwarts of the Kirana Gharana and adept at presenting its nuanced style.

Throughout her career, Manik Varma enchanted audiences with her command over the ragas and her delicate handling of the swaras (notes). She was particularly known for her renditions of bhavgeet (light emotional songs) and bhaktigeet (devotional songs), which endeared her to music aficionados across generations and reinforced her status as a versatile artist. Her albums such as "Classical Vocal: Manik Verma," "Bhaktigeet," and "Natyageet by Manik Verma," are landmarks in the classical music landscape of India. She was honored with several awards for her contribution to Indian classical music, which include the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. Her legacy continues to inspire classical vocalists and lovers of traditional Indian music.
