The Blank Tapes is the creative project of Matt Adams, a multi-instrumentalist and producer based in California, who has been making music since 2003. Known for a distinctive blend of 1960s-inspired psychedelic, surf, and garage pop, Adams often records on vintage 8-track cassette tape recorders in home studios scattered across the California coast. Over the years, The Blank Tapes have released more than 20 albums, with a sound influenced by British Invasion bands like The Kinks and The Beatles, as well as American rock legends such as Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Doors. Adams is also an accomplished visual artist, designing the band's album covers and posters, and has toured extensively internationally with a rotating lineup of band members from California and beyond.
With a laid-back, groovy style that mixes psychedelic jams, catchy melodies, and improvisational guitar work, The Blank Tapes have earned praise from outlets like Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, and LA Weekly. The band's sound captures the warmth and charm of vintage 60s pop with a modern indie twist, making them a staple of the West Coast lo-fi and garage rock scenes. Matt Adams also performs as DJ Blank Tapes and produces other artists, including Pearl Charles, who has been part of The Blank Tapes lineup as well. Recent releases include singles such as "Good Ol’ Days," "Baby," and "Isolation Blues," reflecting the project's ongoing prolific creativity.
