Irmin Schmidt (born 29 May 1937 in Berlin) is a German composer, keyboardist, and one of the founding members of the hugely influential experimental rock band Can. Before Can, he studied music and worked in classical and contemporary contexts, bringing a composer’s mindset to the group’s famously exploratory sound.
Outside of Can, Schmidt has released work that leans into modern classical and soundtrack territory, including compositions and film music. He’s widely regarded as a key figure in the cross-pollination between avant-garde composition, electronic experimentation, and rock music that helped shape what later got tagged as “krautrock.”
