Fernando Corena was a Swiss operatic bass celebrated for his comic flair and larger-than-life stage presence. Born in Geneva in 1916, he became one of the most beloved basso buffo performers of the mid-20th century. His warm, resonant voice and impeccable timing made him a standout in comedic roles like Don Bartolo in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia and Don Pasquale in Donizetti’s opera of the same name. Corena was a regular at major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he enjoyed a long and successful career beginning in the early 1950s.
While he was capable in more serious bass roles, it was the comic bass characters—full of bluster and wit—that truly defined Corena’s legacy. With his expressive face and charismatic stage demeanor, he brought humor and heart to every performance. His extensive discography continues to showcase his artistry, capturing timeless interpretations of works by Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, and Verdi.
