The House of Love

The House of Love is an alternative rock band from London, formed in 1986 by singer and guitarist Guy Chadwick and original guitarist Terry Bickers. They quickly gained attention for their melodic, guitar-driven sound that combined shimmering textures with introspective lyrics. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1988 on Creation Records, became a cornerstone of the late-80s UK indie scene, featuring the standout track "Christine." Known for their atmospheric sound and moody elegance, The House of Love built a cult following and were often cited alongside other shoegaze and post-punk contemporaries.

Despite early success, the band experienced lineup changes, including the departure of Bickers, which marked a shift in their musical direction. After a long hiatus, The House of Love made a return in the 2000s, releasing new material like She Paints Words in Red and 2022’s A State of Grace. Throughout their career, they’ve remained revered for their influence on the British alternative scene and their ability to craft lush, guitar-drenched pop that still resonates with fans today.
