Luiz Gonzaga

Luiz Gonzaga (1912–1989) was a hugely influential Brazilian singer, songwriter, and accordionist, widely known as the “King of Baião.” Born in Exu, Pernambuco, he helped bring the sounds of Brazil’s Northeast to national attention, popularizing regional styles like baião, forró, and xote and turning them into staples of Brazilian popular music.

Across a long career, Gonzaga became famous for songs that are now considered classics, including “Asa Branca,” “A Vida do Viajante,” and “Assum Preto.” His music often paints vivid, down-to-earth pictures of Northeastern life—its joys, hardships, and migrations—while his distinctive voice and accordion playing made him an instantly recognizable figure in Brazilian culture.
