Wand is an American psychedelic rock band formed in 2013, based in Los Angeles, California. The group was initially conceived by frontman and songwriter Cory Hanson (vocals, guitar), who is joined by Lee Landey (bass), and Evan Burrows (drums). They earned recognition with their debut album, 'Ganglion Reef', released in 2014 under Ty Segall's God? Records label, showcasing a melange of fuzzy guitar riffs, whimsical lyrics, and hallucinogenic melody lines. Wand's sound is noted for embracing a wide array of sonic textures, with their musical ethos pivoting around a nucleus of garage rock, heavy psych, and progressive experimentation.
Over the years, Wand's discography has exhibited a constant evolution, morphing from the heavier, garage-psych roots of 'Golem' (2015) and '1000 Days' (2015) into the more expansive and intricate soundscapes found in 'Plum' (2017) and 'Laughing Matter' (2019). With each release, Wand has broadened their aural palette, incorporating elements of folk, electronic music, and jazz into their work, hinting at influences ranging from prog rock to krautrock. "Perfume," a 2018 EP, further exemplified their capacity for pushing creative boundaries, while their singles "Machine Man" / "M.E." (2020) and their most recent album "Spiders in the Rain" (2022) encapsulate the band's continuous strive for innovation, blending a retrospective sensibility with forward-thinking psychedelia. Wand's commitment to experimentation and a genre-defying approach to music have cemented their standing as a dynamic and enigmatic force in the modern psych-rock scene.
