Soft Machine

Soft Machine emerged as one of the pioneering acts in the progressive rock and jazz fusion scenes of the late 1960s and 1970s. Originating from Canterbury, England, the band is often associated with the so-called "Canterbury scene," a collective of musicians known for their distinctive blend of psychedelic rock, jazz, and avant-garde influences. The group was formed in 1966 by Robert Wyatt (drums, vocals), Kevin Ayers (bass, vocals), and Mike Ratledge (keyboards), with guitarist Daevid Allen joining shortly before their departure to perform in France.

Over the years, Soft Machine has undergone numerous lineup changes, with Wyatt, Ayers, and Allen all leaving the band by the mid-70s, paving the way for new members and musical directions. The period covered by their most recent releases, including "Alive and Well - Recorded in Paris" and "The Harvest Albums 1975-1978", is emblematic of their continuous evolution. By this time, the group had shifted from their psychedelic and experimental roots towards a more instrumental and jazz-fusion focused sound, as seen in albums like "Bundles" and "Softs". The 21st century has seen renewed interest in their earlier works and live performances, as evidenced by live albums such as "Virtually (Live)" and "Live at the Baked Potato," which capture the intricate improvisations and musical prowess that have long been hallmarks of Soft Machine's enduring legacy.
