Tír na nÓg

Tír na nÓg is an Irish folk duo formed in Dublin in 1969 by Leo O'Kelly and Sonny Condell. They are often regarded as one of the first progressive folk bands, drawing comparisons to artists like Nick Drake and groups like Pentangle. Their music is deeply rooted in Celtic traditions, featuring intricate acoustic guitar work and close harmony singing. During their early years, they toured extensively in the UK and internationally, supporting various rock bands. Between 1971 and 1973, they released three critically acclaimed studio albums: *Tír na nÓg*, *A Tear and a Smile*, and *Strong in the Sun*. Although they disbanded in 1974, they reformed in 1985 and have since performed sporadically, particularly in Ireland.

The duo's music is characterized by its strong Celtic influences, often incorporating elements of Eastern music and later introducing electric instruments and drums. Their distinctive style has been praised for its complexity and uniqueness, setting them apart from other folk bands of their time. After their initial breakup, both O'Kelly and Condell pursued solo careers, with Condell forming the band Scullion and O'Kelly working as a producer and releasing solo albums. Tír na nÓg's legacy continues to be celebrated for their innovative approach to folk music and their enduring influence on the genre.
