Leo "Bud" Welch

Leo "Bud" Welch, born July 22, 1932, in Sabougla, Mississippi, was a vibrant figure in the realms of blues and gospel music whose career experienced a remarkable late-life resurgence. Spending most of his life in relative obscurity, Welch was deeply rooted in the rich musical traditions of the rural American South, honing his skills in local juke joints and churches. Despite playing music since he was 13, it wasn't until the age of 81 that Welch released his debut album, "Sabougla Voices" in 2014, a project that shone a spotlight on his raw, emotive vocal style and rugged guitar playing, drawing heavily on his gospel roots.

Following the success of his debut, Welch's music career blossomed, with subsequent releases such as "I Don't Prefer No Blues" in 2015 and "Live at the Iridium" showcasing his versatility across blues and gospel genres. His albums, including "The Final Sessions," "I Come To Praise His Name," "Don't Let The Devil Ride," and "The Angels In Heaven Done Signed My Name," not only expanded his discography but also solidified his place in the pantheon of late-found musical treasures. Despite starting his recording career in his eighties, Welch's music resonated with audiences globally, offering a testament to the enduring power and appeal of the blues and gospel music. Leo "Bud" Welch passed away on December 19, 2017, leaving behind a powerful legacy as a testament to the idea that it's never too late to pursue one's dreams.
