David Lowery is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist best known as the founder and frontman of two influential alternative rock bands: Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker. Emerging in the 1980s with Camper Van Beethoven, Lowery helped pioneer a quirky, genre-blending sound that incorporated elements of folk, punk, ska, and world music—most famously evident in their indie hit “Take the Skinheads Bowling.” In the early 1990s, he formed Cracker, which found success with a more straightforward rock sound and radio hits like “Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now)” and “Low.”
Beyond his work as a performer, Lowery has also become known as an outspoken advocate for musicians' rights in the digital age, taking a strong stance on copyright issues and fair compensation for artists. He’s also a lecturer in music business and has written extensively on industry economics. His solo work and collaborations continue to reflect his sharp wit, intellectual edge, and deep engagement with American musical traditions.
