St. Lucia is the brainchild of South African-born musician Jean-Philip Grobler, whose journey in music took him from singing in the Drakensberg Boys Choir to crafting his own distinctive style of electro-pop infused with an 80s-inspired aesthetic. Grobler established St. Lucia after moving to Brooklyn, New York, where he expanded his project into a full band for live performances, consisting of his wife Patricia Beranek, Ross Clark, Nick Brown, and Dustin Kaufman. The band debuted with a self-titled EP in 2012, catching ears with their lush soundscapes and infectious melodies.
St. Lucia's full-length albums, beginning with "When the Night" in 2013, solidified their reputation for creating anthemic, synth-driven tracks that often evoke a sense of nostalgia while exploring themes of love, longing, and escapism. Their commitment to vibrant, high-energy performances has earned them a dedicated fanbase and slots at major music festivals. With subsequent releases including "Matter" in 2016, and "Hyperion" in 2018, St. Lucia continued to evolve their sound, blending groovy pop-hooks with dreamy production. Their more recent work, such as the singles “Hey Now” and the remixes from their deluxe release “Utopia,” showcase the band's ability to remix and reinterpret their own material, as well as collaborate with other artists, ensuring that St. Lucia remains a staple in the indie-pop music scene with a sound that's both familiar and constantly evolving.
