Alexander Siloti

Alexander Siloti (1863–1945) was an influential figure in the realm of classical music, both as a concert pianist and a composer. Born in the Russian Empire, he was a student of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and later of Franz Liszt, becoming one of Liszt’s last students. His skill and dedication to music not only established him as a remarkable pianist but also as a teacher and conductor, greatly influencing the musical scene of his time.

Siloti is well-known for his arrangements and transcriptions, especially those of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works. One of his most famous transcriptions is the Prelude in B minor, based on Bach’s Prelude in E minor (BWV 855a). This arrangement exemplifies Siloti's ability to re-imagine the works of Bach with profound sensitivity and artistic insight. Throughout his career, Siloti was deeply involved in the promotion of not just Bach’s compositions but also those of Rachmaninoff and many other composers, playing a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the composers of the past and the audiences of his time. His contributions to classical music, through both his performances and his transcriptions, have left a lasting impact that continues to be celebrated today.
