Daniel Owino Misiani

Daniel Owino Misiani was a legendary Tanzanian-born musician often referred to as the "father of benga" music, a popular genre in Kenya that blends Luo traditional rhythms with modern instrumentation. Born in 1940 in Mara Region, Tanzania, Misiani later moved to Kenya, where he became a pioneering force in East African music. He founded the influential group Shirati Jazz Band (later known as D.O. Misiani and Shirati Band), which rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s for its socially conscious lyrics and infectious dance rhythms.

Misiani was well known for his bold commentary on politics, society, and culture, and his music frequently resonated with audiences across Kenya and beyond. Despite occasionally clashing with authorities over his outspoken views, his influence on the benga genre and East African music scene remains unmistakable. Misiani continued to perform and record music until his death in 2006, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire new generations of African musicians.
