François de Roubaix

François de Roubaix was a prolific French composer famed for his innovative and genre-blending film scores which often incorporated elements of jazz, classical, pop, and electronic music. Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine on April 3, 1939, de Roubaix was largely self-taught, opting not to go through formal conservatory education. His early passion for music was manifested through learning various instruments and an enthusiasm for jazz, which would later influence his eclectic compositional style. De Roubaix first garnered attention in the 1960s and quickly became sought after in the film industry, defining the sound of French cinema in the era with his scores for movies such as "Le Samouraï" (1967) and "Les Aventuriers" (1967).

François de Roubaix's approach to crafting soundtracks was as unique as the melodies that resulted from it; he was known for concocting rich tapestries of sound utilizing both traditional acoustic instruments and pioneering electronic synthesizers, which infused his compositions with a distinct futuristic and often whimsical character. This signature style is prominently heard in works like the hauntingly beautiful "Les Lèvres Rouges" and the playful "Chapi Chapo". His career was tragically cut short when he died in a diving accident on November 22, 1975. Despite his untimely passing, de Roubaix remains a revered figure in music, celebrated posthumously through releases of his work, such as "Du Jazz à L'Electro 1965-1975" and the numerous original motion picture soundtracks reissued for a new generation of listeners and cinephiles to discover and enjoy. His influence continues to resonate in the realms of film scoring and electronic music, a testament to his genius and the enduring power of his compositions.
