Smokie

Smokie is an iconic English rock band that hails from Bradford, Yorkshire. Formed in 1965 originally under the name "The Yen," then "The Sphynx," and later "Essence," the group found enduring fame after they adopted the moniker Smokie in the mid-1970s. The classic line-up included Chris Norman (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Terry Uttley (bass, backing vocals), Alan Silson (lead guitar, backing vocals), and Pete Spencer (drums).

They shot to fame throughout Europe with their melodic pop rock sound, marked by their landmark hit “Living Next Door to Alice” in 1976. Throughout the late '70s and early '80s, Smokie enjoyed success with a string of hits including “If You Think You Know How to Love Me,” “Don't Play Your Rock 'n' Roll to Me,” and a cover of the classic track “Needles and Pins.” The band's ability to produce chart-topping music diminished during the '80s, but they remained a popular live act, particularly on the European continent. The 2000s saw the band releasing a mix of new materials and revisiting their hits with remasters and acoustic versions, albums such as "Uncovered" series and "Eclipse Acoustic," showing their versatility to adapt their classic sound to a modern context. Additionally, they've maintained a strong presence on the live music scene, as evidenced by live album releases such as "Live in Beijing." Despite changes in lineup and the untimely death of Chris Norman's predecessor Alan Barton in 1995, Smokie continues to entertain audiences with their nostalgic flare and timeless tunes.
