Michiaki Ueno

Michiaki Ueno is a highly acclaimed Japanese cellist born in Paraguay in 1995 who has rapidly risen as one of the most promising classical musicians today. Starting cello at age five, he made a remarkable solo debut at just eleven at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall with the Lalo Cello Concerto. His early success includes becoming the first Japanese winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in 2009, followed by top prizes at the Romanian International Music Competition and the International Johannes Brahms Competition.

Ueno’s international breakthrough came with his stunning performance of the Lutosławski Cello Concerto that won him first prize and three special awards, including the Young Audience Prize, at the 75th Geneva International Music Competition in 2021. Raised in a musical family and having spent his early years in Spain before moving to Japan, he has captivated audiences worldwide with his eloquent, natural musicality and superb technique. Ueno performs on exquisite instruments, including a 1730 Stradivarius on loan, and continues to collaborate with leading orchestras and legendary artists in the classical music world.
