Hot Tuna is an American blues-rock outfit best known as a long-running side project (and eventually a full-time home base) for Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady. Formed in the late 1960s, the group started out leaning heavily into acoustic country blues and traditional American roots music, spotlighting Kaukonen’s fingerpicking guitar work and Casady’s melodic, roaming bass lines.
Over the years Hot Tuna has also plugged in for louder, electric sets, moving between intimate duo performances and full-band rock shows depending on the era and the lineup. They’ve built a reputation as a road-tested live act with plenty of concert recordings circulating—capturing the improvisational, jam-friendly feel that’s kept the band active for decades.
