Fat Mattress was a British rock band formed in 1968 by Noel Redding, best known for his role as the bassist in the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The group also included Neil Landon on vocals, Jim Leverton on bass, and Eric Dillon on drums. Fat Mattress allowed Redding to explore his skills as a guitarist and vocalist, offering him more creative freedom than he had with Hendrix. Their music was influenced by American West Coast psychedelic and folk-rock bands, as well as British pop-psychedelic groups like Traffic. Their debut album, released in 1969, was a significant hit, particularly in Holland, where it reached number one. The band's second album, "Fat Mattress II," followed but did not achieve the same success, leading to the group's dissolution in 1970.
During their active years, Fat Mattress supported the Jimi Hendrix Experience on tour, with Redding uniquely performing as both the Experience's bassist and Fat Mattress's guitarist. The band's performances included notable appearances at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1969 alongside Bob Dylan and The Who. Despite their promising start, internal conflicts led to Redding's departure from the band, and they eventually disbanded after completing their second album.
