Fugazi

Formed in Washington, D.C. in 1986, Fugazi emerged from the city's vibrant hardcore punk scene to become one of the most influential and fiercely independent bands in alternative rock. The band was founded by vocalist/guitarist Ian MacKaye, previously of the seminal hardcore band Minor Threat, who partnered with guitarist/vocalist Guy Picciotto, bassist Joe Lally, and drummer Brendan Canty. Known for their unwavering DIY ethic, Fugazi eschewed major labels, maintained low ticket prices for their shows, and operated their own record label, Dischord Records, through which they released all their music.

Over the course of their career, Fugazi's sound evolved from the raw, intense energy of their early releases like "Repeater + 3 Songs" and "13 Songs," to incorporate more complex rhythms and experimental sounds on albums like "Red Medicine" and "The Argument." Despite never using mainstream channels of promotion, the band earned a massive following around the world, thanks to their powerful live performances, uncompromising political stance, and a relentless drive to maintain artistic integrity. Fugazi went on indefinite hiatus in 2003, leaving behind a legacy that has inspired countless bands and musicians across the alternative music spectrum. Their influence is felt not just in their music, but in their ethos, which continues to resonate with new generations of artists and fans alike.
