Roman Statkowski (1859-1925) was a Polish composer and pianist whose lush, romantic-era style blended Chopin-inspired lyricism with Polish folk influences. A student of St. Petersburg Conservatory and later Jules Massenet in Paris, he’s best known for his opera *Maria* (1904), which won an international competition judged by Puccini. Though less prolific than some contemporaries, his piano works – think swirling mazurkas, tender nocturnes, and lively études – have seen a modern revival through recent recordings. Statkowski spent much of his career teaching at Warsaw Conservatory, mentoring future generations of Polish musicians. While his music temporarily fell into obscurity, modern pianists are rediscovering the charm and technical finesse of pieces like the *Humoresques* and *Deux Morceaux* through albums like *Piano Works, Vol. I*.
