Michel Blavet was an eminent French composer and virtuoso flautist of the Baroque era, renowned for advancing the flute's presence in the realm of classical music. Born on March 13, 1700, in Besançon, Blavet's exceptional talents were evident from a young age, leading him to Paris where he quickly rose to prominence. He served the Duke of Lorraine and later joined the Paris Opera orchestra, also holding a coveted position at the court of Louis XV. His adeptness earned him the reputation of being one of the best flautists in Europe during his lifetime.
Blavet's compositional oeuvre, though not extensive, is highly regarded for its melodic ingenuity and technical demands, perfectly tailored to showcase the capabilities of the transverse flute. He is especially celebrated for his "Six Sonatas for Flute and Continuo, Op. 2," a paramount contribution to the repertoire which exhibits both lyrical grace and elaborate ornamentation, reflecting the gallant style of the period. These sonatas, along with other works by Blavet, continue to captivate performers and audiences alike, evidenced by numerous modern recordings, including those by Claudio Ferrarini with Accademia Farnese. Though he passed away on October 28, 1768, Michel Blavet's legacy endures through his music, immortalizing him as a pillar of Baroque flute composition.
