Gireesh Puthenchery (1961–2010) was a hugely influential Indian lyricist and screenwriter best known for his work in Malayalam cinema. Active from the late 1980s onward, he became one of the defining voices in modern Malayalam film music, writing lyrics for hundreds of songs across a wide range of genres—romance, drama, comedy, and devotional music—often praised for their poetic imagery and conversational warmth.
Over the course of his career, he collaborated with many of the major composers and directors in the industry and earned multiple Kerala State Film Awards for his songwriting. Beyond film work, he also wrote devotional and album music, which is why collections of his Ayyappa and other devotional lyrics continue to circulate widely.
