The Monochrome Set are an English post-punk/new wave band that formed in London in the late 1970s. Emerging from the same scene as acts like Adam and the Ants (founder Bid had been involved early on), they quickly carved out their own niche with wiry guitar lines, off-kilter pop melodies, and sly, literate lyrics—music that felt simultaneously artful and catchy.
They debuted on the Rough Trade label with the album *Strange Boutique* (1980), followed by early highlights like *Love Zombies* (1980) and *Eligible Bachelors* (1982). Over the years the band have been known for an eclectic, genre-hopping sound—touching on everything from punky jangle-pop to cabaret and exotica—along with periodic reunions and continued releases well beyond their original era.
