Sugar Minott (born Lincoln Barrington Minott, 1956–2010) was a hugely influential Jamaican reggae singer, producer, and sound-system figure, often credited as a key architect of the “lover’s rock” style coming out of Jamaica in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Raised in Kingston, he came up through the sound-system scene (including time with the Youthman Promotion sound) before breaking through with warm, melodic vocals and streetwise songwriting that helped define the transition from roots reggae into the early dancehall era.
Beyond his own hits, Minott left a deep imprint behind the boards: he ran the Black Roots label and helped spotlight a new generation of Jamaican talent—most famously giving an early push to a young Garnett Silk. Whether you know him for sweet lovers tunes or tougher, rhythm-driven dancehall cuts, Sugar Minott’s catalogue sits right at the heart of modern reggae’s evolution.
