Pandit Jasraj (28 January 1930 – 17 August 2020) was an eminent Indian classical vocalist, belonging to the Mewati Gharana (musical lineage). With a musical career spanning over eight decades, he was a doyen of Hindustani classical music and one of the prominent figures who popularized classical music on a global scale. Born in Pili Mandori, a village in the Hisar district of Haryana, Pandit Jasraj was initiated into the vast world of music by his father, Pandit Motiram, and later by his elder brother, Pandit Maniram. He further honed his craft under the tutelage of Maharaja Jaiwant Singh Waghela and the guidance of the renowned Swami Vallabhdas of the Agra Gharana.

Jasraj's music was marked by his unique voice that traversed effortlessly across three and a half octaves and his innovative renditions of the khayal, which imbued the rigour of classical discipline with the emotive aspects of bhakti (devotion). His notable contributions include the introduction of a novel melodic form called Jasrangi, which is a duet system singing simultaneously at different pitches—a masterpiece, paving the way for new experimentation in classical music. Pandit Jasraj's discography is extensive, reflecting his mastery in a diverse repertoire, from soulful bhajans to intricate khayals and spiritual mantras. His most recent releases, such as "Khayal," "Kabir - Contemporary Expressions," and "Morning Mantras & Chants," are testament to his versatility and depth as a maestro. He was also a respected guru, with many of his students becoming notable musicians themselves. His influence has left an indelible mark on the music world, and his legacy continues to inspire both artists and connoisseurs alike.
