Johann Paul von Westhoff was a German Baroque composer and violinist who lived from 1656 to 1705. He was known for his groundbreaking works for solo violin, particularly his six partitas published in 1696. These pieces were some of the earliest known compositions for unaccompanied violin, predating Bach's famous sonatas and partitas by about 20 years. Westhoff spent much of his career as a court musician in Dresden and Weimar, where he likely crossed paths with other notable musicians of his time. His compositions, while not as widely known today as some of his contemporaries, have been recognized for their technical innovation and contribution to the development of violin repertoire in the Baroque era.
