Charles-Marie Widor

Charles-Marie Widor (1844–1937) was a French composer, organist, and teacher, best known for his monumental organ symphonies. He served as the organist at Saint-Sulpice in Paris for an incredible 64 years, where he played and composed for one of the most famous Cavaillé-Coll organs. His "Symphonie pour orgue No. 5" includes the famous Toccata, a dazzling and widely performed piece that remains a favorite at weddings and recitals. Beyond his organ works, Widor was also an influential teacher at the Paris Conservatoire, mentoring future legends such as Marcel Dupré and Olivier Messiaen. His contributions to French symphonic organ music helped shape the instrument’s role in both liturgical and concert settings, solidifying his legacy as one of the great composers of the Romantic era.
