Joseph Bodin de Boismortier was a French composer of the Baroque era, known for his prolific output and accessible, tuneful music. Born in 1689 in Thionville, France, Boismortier achieved the rare feat of living entirely off the publication of his music—no small task in the 18th century! He composed in a variety of genres, including instrumental sonatas, cantatas, operas, and ballets, and was especially fond of writing for the flute, an instrument he helped popularize among amateur musicians of the time.
Boismortier had a knack for catchy melodies and a practical flair for writing music that was both elegant and easy to play, which made him hugely popular among Parisian music lovers. Among his best-known works are his opus 50 sonatas for viols and the comic ballet Don Quichotte chez la duchesse. His music reflects the charm and grace of the French rococo style, and he remained a celebrated figure until his death in 1755.
