John Kahn

John Kahn (May 13, 1947 – May 20, 1996) was an American bassist and producer best known for his long-running musical partnership with Jerry Garcia. A key figure in the extended Grateful Dead universe, Kahn played with Garcia in a range of projects outside the Dead, including the Jerry Garcia Band, and he became a familiar presence on many of Garcia’s most-loved live recordings.

Kahn is especially associated with the intimate club circuit and the loose, exploratory feel of Garcia’s side bands—documented on releases like *Live at Keystone* and other “Pure Jerry” archival sets. Beyond his playing, he also worked behind the scenes as an audio engineer/producer, helping shape the sound of several live and studio projects tied to Garcia’s post-Dead creative life.
