Mudhoney, the Seattle rockers who helped pioneer the grunge movement that swept the music world in the early 1990s, have been keeping the spirit of raw, unpolished rock alive for over three decades. Formed in 1988, the band consists of vocalist and rhythm guitarist Mark Arm, lead guitarist Steve Turner, bassist Guy Maddison, and drummer Dan Peters. Mudhoney emerged from the ashes of Green River, one of the first groups to fuse punk with hard rock (a style that would come to define grunge), when Arm and Turner decided to continue their musical partnership.
The band's early Sub Pop releases, especially the single "Touch Me I'm Sick" and the Superfuzz Bigmuff EP, were crucial in shaping the sound and attitude of the Seattle music scene. Their music is characterized by a gritty, high-distortion sound that is both irreverent and heavy, and their influence can be heard in the works of more commercially successful bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Despite the fact that Mudhoney never achieved the same level of fame as some of their grunge contemporaries, they have retained a dedicated cult following and continue to release new music and tour internationally. Their catalog, which includes "Plastic Eternity," "Digital Garbage," and the comprehensive compilation "Real Low Vibe: The Reprise Recordings 1992-1998," showcases a band that has remained true to its roots while also exploring new sonic territories, reflecting both the energy and the wisdom of their years in the punk-rock trenches.
