Fort Minor is a hip hop-based side project of Mike Shinoda, who is best known as the rapper, primary songwriter, keyboardist, rhythm guitarist, and one of the two vocalists of the American rock band Linkin Park. Conceived during a hiatus of Linkin Park, Fort Minor manifested Shinoda's desire to delve into the hip hop scene and showcase his emceeing skills beyond the nu-metal framework of his main band. Fort Minor's debut album, "The Rising Tied," was released in 2005 and featured collaborations with artists such as Jay-Z, who executively produced the album, Common, John Legend, and Black Thought of The Roots, among others.

The project is notable for its hit single "Where'd You Go," which effectively tugged at listeners' heartstrings with its emotive lyrics and stirring vocals from Holly Brook (now known as Skylar Grey) and Jonah Matranga. "Petrified/Remember The Name" also received significant attention, with the latter track becoming an inspirational anthem due to its catchy chorus and motivational lyrics, emphasizing hard work and dedication. Although "The Rising Tied" remains Fort Minor's only studio album to date, Shinoda has occasionally released singles such as "Welcome" and mixes like "Already Over (Fort Minor Mix)" featuring Dom McLennon, reminding fans that the Fort Minor project remains an active, albeit sporadic, outlet for his creative explorations in hip hop.
