Francesco Barsanti

Francesco Barsanti was an Italian composer and instrumentalist from the Baroque period, best known for his work in early 18th-century Britain. Born in Lucca around 1690, he moved to London in the early 18th century, where he became part of the vibrant musical scene. Barsanti played the oboe and flute and was associated with influential musical circles, including the famous Academy of Ancient Music. His music blends Italian melodic elegance with British taste and includes a variety of works such as recorder sonatas, concerti grossi, and arrangements of Scottish folk tunes.

Later in his career, Barsanti relocated to Edinburgh, where he contributed significantly to the city's musical life. One of his most notable achievements was his set of 12 concerti grossi, Op. 3, which demonstrate his mastery of Baroque form and expressive depth. Though not as widely known today as some of his contemporaries, Barsanti’s compositions are appreciated for their lyrical beauty and inventive orchestration.
